Find My Friends App

Today the hubby suggested I download the "Find My Friends" app. It's an app that lets you locate your friends by their Apple device (pad, pod, phone) via GPS locator on your Apple device. For us the application is I can see how far away he is when picking me up from work or somewhere else without having to call him while he's on the highway (which he really hates me to do lol). This app makes perfect sense for us. What I can't figure out is what application this would have in any other situation besides parents keeping track of their kids. I suppose it could be good for an insecure significant other who wants to know where their boyfriend or girlfriend is at all times.... but if you need an app to tell you where your lover is, you probably need another lover lol.

You do have the ability to hide specific locations from your list of friends in the app. I don't see adding any friends on it besides my husband. I already have Foursquare for my social sharing of my location and seeing where friends are. I don't think there is anyone else who literally needs to know the exact address I'm at at all times, or would even care to know lol.

I will say though, it was pretty cool watching his "dot" on the map make it's way to pick me up today.

Does anyone have the "Find My Friends" app? For what instances do you use it?

  1. Whoa, that's a bit scary and could get a lot of folks in trouble! Good thing I don't have to worry about that but it is a bit creepy when you really think about it. Does it locate ANYone on your contacts list or do they also have to have the app downloaded as well, in order to locate them? I can see how it works in instances such as what you mentioned however. No more, "I'm 10 mins away" and really, you're just leaving out the door. Lol! Not saying your hubbs would do this to you though! :)

    1. They have to have the app AND you have to accept their friendship for someone to be able to tell where you are.

  2. I was going to say this was a little too creepy for me, but someone already beat me too it.

  3. I have FourSquare, that allows me to check in at places - and see where other friends with FourSquare are. The difference there, is that I can see what stores/places they're checking into. It's great in that I hear of new restaurants & stuff. Like you're saying - the friend request is sent & we have to accept their request. But it's not just a "your friend is 5 miles away" but more "Your friend is at Pizza Hut". I enjoy it for the new places I might learn of. But just a general "where are you 'cause I'm watching you" is kinda creepy. ;)

  4. That is so interesting- I have never heard of it! I do agree, though, that it may be really convenient when you want to know how close your spouse is or where your kids are...other than that, nah!

  5. It's like any other social app from my perspective - it works better when lots of people you are close to use it. I did have one friend who used it and we would e-stalk each other but then I think we both stopped using it and deleted it. I would use it again if a bunch of people used it. If my boyfriend gets an iPhone I might install it again, although we already know where the other is most of the time. I use foursquare daily and so do some of my friends. I like it better because it alerts you where people are rather than having to check in. I think your use of it makes the most sense, and helps with car safety too!
