My Simple Staple Oatmeal

I like oatmeal. I've been eating it since I was a kid. I usually stick to the Quaker instant oatmeal  brand, and sometimes a store brand from whatever store I go to. One of my goals in eating cleaner is avoiding packaged foods and making my own dishes from scratch where I can. Starting with whole oats is more nutritious than the instant oats after all, and you can control the amount and type of sugar making it yourself. I've experimented with a few recipes but I've finally nailed down a recipe that is delicious and dare I say it, better than the Quaker instant maple syrup and brown sugar variety.

1/2 cup Quaker rolled oats
3/4 cup vanilla almond milk (use one cup if you like looser oatmeal, I like mine thick)
1 teaspoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon maple syrup
a few dashes of cinnamon

*makes one bowl

Bring the almond milk to a boil, add in the rolled oats. Cook on medium heat for 5-10 minutes, until you can see the oats are cooked and you have the consistency you want. Stir in maple syrup, cinnamon and brown sugar.

BOOM. You've got great oatmeal. What really makes this good is using the vanilla almond milk, it gives you a nice base flavor to the oatmeal that you don't get from regular milk or water. Coming in at a nice 307 calories, I give this a thumbs up for breakfast.

Happy Sunday. Go make some oatmeal. :-D

  3. I love oatmeal. I don't tend to eat breakfast anymore, because the thought of food when I first get up makes me want to hurl. But I will usually have a couple mouthfuls of dry oat flakes (yeah, I'm weird). But oatmeal is like a comfort food to me. I usually just eat it with brown sugar.
