Being Healthy is Easy

The tenants of being healthy are really very simple. If you look up ways to avoid or lessen your chances of diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. you always get the same things:

  • Drink water
  • Eat vegetables and fruits
  • Exercise
  • Get the recommended amount of fiber and other vitamins
  • Limit intake of sugars and red meat
  • Limit the intake of highly processed foods
While that isn't 100% protection against all ailments, that is as close to a healthy holy grail as you can get.

So if it's really that simple, why isn't everyone healthy?

It takes resolve to eat right and exercise. This is especially true if you don't grow up particularly health conscious and you try to undo twenty years of bad eating and exercise habits. There's a simple set of "rules" to follow, but it takes work to follow them.

What do you do to keep yourself on the healthy track?

  1. This is why it's a work-in-progress. All those "lose 15 lbs" in a week things on tv are crazy. Losing a lb a week is already a lot.

I say just stay active and as long as you feel healthy in your body and in your mind, you're good to go.

  2. It's sooo hard to be healthy! I think it just takes day to day determination. I use apps to help me keep track of my calories and exercise. I try not to make it a big deal if I splurge one weekend. Sometimes your body needs a break from the strict routine of a diet (I tend to drop pounds immediately after a "cheat" day).

  3. @Thu - totally! It's about continual process.

@CC - I definitely agree, you can't be too regimented. I use and app too, and I'll allow myself a day a week maybe if something special is going on to not count and splurge a little.

  4. I honestly have no idea how I'm so healthy. I don't really try to eat particularly healthy, not that I go out of my way to eat unhealthily, I just never really worry about whether the food I'm eating is really healthy or not. I am really active though, so I think that helps (so far, anyway). I suppose I should care a bit more, but I figure that I only get to live once, so I might as well enjoy it and not stress about my eating habits. And I am, and feel, fairly healthy
